A Business Trip We Won't Forget


Some business trips are productive.  Others are memorable.


A select few remind me of why you got into this business in the first place.


Recently, my wife, Danyel Cake, who also serves as Benchmark Audiovisual’s Design Director, and I traveled to the Florida Keys to visit the headquarters of Coastal Source and spend time with founder and CEO Franco D'Ascanio.  While the trip included incredible scenery, world-class hospitality, and quality family time, the true highlight was gaining direct insight into one of the most respected outdoor audio and lighting companies in the industry, Coastal Source.


As the founder of Benchmark Audiovisual, I'm always searching for ways to improve the experiences we create for our clients. Whether we're designing a luxury home theater, whole-home audio system, architectural lighting package, or an outdoor entertainment space, I believe the best lessons often come directly from industry leaders who have already solved difficult problems.


Franco's story, philosophy, and approach to business reinforced many of the principles we've built Benchmark Audiovisual on here in Austin, TX.

The Problem That Created Coastal Source


One of the most fascinating parts of our visit was hearing how Coastal Source came to exist.


Long before Coastal Source became an industry-leading manufacturer, Franco operated multiple businesses throughout the Florida Keys, including AV integration, landscape design, outdoor living, pools, nurseries, and luxury construction.


As he explained, the company wasn't created because someone wanted to build speakers.


It was created because existing outdoor products kept failing.


While working on luxury waterfront properties, Franco and his team found themselves replacing outdoor speakers, lighting fixtures, ceiling fans, hardware, and other products that simply couldn't withstand harsh coastal environments.


Manufacturers frequently responded with some variation of: "Sorry, you live on the coast."


For Franco, that wasn't an acceptable answer.


Instead of accepting failure as normal, he began researching corrosion, materials science, environmental testing, and product engineering. What started as an effort to improve his own installations evolved into years of research and development and ultimately became Coastal Source.


The lesson was simple:

Great companies are often born from solving problems that everyone else has accepted as unavoidable.


A Commitment to Engineering Over Marketing


One thing that became immediately apparent during our tour was that Coastal Source isn't simply a marketing company with outsourced products.


Their commitment to engineering is remarkable.


Franco showed us testing facilities designed to simulate some of the harshest environmental conditions imaginable:

  • Salt-fog corrosion chambers

  • Water intrusion testing

  • Thermal shock testing

  • UV exposure testing

  • Freeze testing

  • Vacuum testing

  • Long-term environmental durability testing


What impressed me most wasn't the equipment itself. It was the mindset.  Rather than asking, "How do we sell more products?"  The question seemed to be: "How do we eliminate failure?"


That mindset is incredibly similar to how we approach system design at Benchmark Audiovisual.


Our goal isn't simply to install technology.  Our goal is to design systems that continue performing years after installation.

Outdoor Living Is No Longer an Afterthought


One of the biggest takeaways from our conversations was the growing importance of outdoor living spaces.


For years, homeowners focused primarily on interior spaces.  Today, many luxury homeowners place equal importance on their outdoor environments, which just makes clients’ lives better.  #When your backyard sounds as good as it looks. 🎶


Pools, Outdoor Kitchens, Grottos in Austin, Covered patios, Landscape lighting, Architectural lighting, distributed audio…  These spaces have become true extensions of the home.


Franco shared an observation that resonated with me:

In many luxury projects, the outdoor areas often represent a disproportionately high return on investment compared to the effort required to build them.


The reason is simple.  Outdoor entertainment spaces are where families gather.  They're where friends socialize.  They're where memories are made.


At Benchmark Audiovisual, we've seen this trend throughout Austin, Lakeway, Westlake Hills, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Liberty Hill, and the surrounding Texas Hill Country.


Clients increasingly want their outdoor spaces to perform at the same level as their interiors.

One topic that came up repeatedly throughout the day was demonstrations.


Franco emphasized something we've found to be true ourselves:

A Masterclass in Customer Experience


Another lesson that stood out was Franco's relentless focus on customer experience.


During our conversations, he discussed everything from inventory management to dealer support to technical assistance.


One statement particularly stuck with me:

"We don't want to be the biggest. We want to be the best."


That philosophy mirrors our own approach at Benchmark Audiovisual.


Growth is important.  Revenue matters.  But long-term success comes from delivering exceptional experiences consistently.


Whether it's maintaining inventory during supply chain disruptions, supporting integrators in the field, or providing design assistance, Coastal Source has built its reputation around making life easier for its dealers and customers.


Those same principles have guided our business for nearly twenty years.


The Future of Outdoor Audio and Lighting


One of the most exciting parts of our visit was experiencing several of Coastal Source's newest technologies.


We explored:

  • Advanced outdoor lighting demonstrations


What impressed me most was how thoughtfully the systems were designed.

Business Lessons Beyond Audio and Lighting


While the technology was impressive, some of the most valuable insights had nothing to do with speakers or lighting.


Throughout our conversations, Franco repeatedly emphasized analyzing business performance through measurable outcomes.


  • What products create value?

  • What services generate profit?

  • What causes friction?

  • What creates customer satisfaction?

  • What should be expanded?

  • What should be eliminated?


These are questions every business owner should continually ask.


Many companies fall into the trap of continuing activities simply because they've always done them.  Franco shared examples of intentionally removing services that no longer provided value, even when doing so felt uncomfortable.


That level of discipline is something every entrepreneur can learn from.


Why Design Matters More Than Ever


Danyel Cake handles our Design Team at Benchmark. She especially enjoyed discussing the aesthetics/design side of the business.


One theme that emerged repeatedly throughout the visit was the growing importance of thoughtful design integration.


Today's clients expect technology to disappear.  They want incredible experiences without visual clutter.  They want lighting that enhances architecture.  They want audio systems that blend seamlessly into the landscape.  They want technology that complements design rather than competing with it.


At Benchmark Audiovisual, this aligns perfectly with our philosophy.  The best systems balance performance and aesthetics.


Neither should come at the expense of the other.


Our Biggest Takeaway


After spending time with Franco, one conclusion became clear:

Their success wasn't built solely on products.  It was built on solving problems.


That's a lesson that applies to every industry.


The companies that endure are the ones that consistently identify challenges, improve experiences, and create meaningful value for their customers.


Technology changes.  Products evolve.  Markets shift.


But that principle remains constant.
